In March, 2009, I retired from daily newspaper journalism after 28 years as a staff photographer at The Bakersfield Californian, a highly-regarded medium size newspaper known for having a very good photography staff. I now make my living as an instructor at Bakersfield College, and as a freelance photographer. I teach photojournalism and multimedia reporting in the journalism department and intro to digital photography and intro to Photoshop Elements at the college’s Levan Institute, a pretty cool, workshop-oriented school for working adults. I also own John Harte Digital Photography Services, which does outstanding wedding and corporate photojournalism, and Shooting Star Sports Photography, the world’s first custom sports photography service for individual athletes. All that keeps me insanely busy from September through May. Summer time belongs exclusively to me. I don’t work or accept any assignments, and utilize this precious time to travel and practice my infrared photography. I also have a little fun with my Bachelor Boy Cooking Blog, where I make some of my favorite recipes, photograph as I cook, and then eat it all up.
